FEATURED BOOKS — Clan of the Dung-Sniffers by Lee Danielle Hubbard

LachleiM. H. Bonham

Lee Danielle Hubbard recently sat down with us to discuss her novel Clan of the Dung-Sniffers.

1. Where does the idea of a Clan of guys come from in you? You are obviously not male yourself.

I have always preferred writing from a male perspective. I spend all of my own life as a female; when I write, I want to adopt a different reality. There is also the fact that male characters seemed to fit more naturally into the cultural world of Clan.

2. Could your idea of society actually happen/take place?

The societal structures presented in Clan of the Dung-Sniffers are intended to remind one of societies in real life - the enmity between nobles and Bedouin for instance, or urbanites and the religious orders. Without an environment like the one in Clan, however (with an acid sea and isolated settlements) I do not think that this society exactly would ever form.

3. What sort of messages are you bringing across in Clan?

I am not a moral philosopher. Clan is more a book of ideas and images than it is of edifying 'messages.' I explore the idea of the grotesque, and how human compassion may be able to overcome initial aversion. Human transmogrification fascinates me. I like to watch characters suffer under dire and unexpected circumstances, and then see how they deal with their suffering.

4. Do you see Clan taking the readers to another place such as Tolkien took readers?

Tolkien sets the bar for all would-be fantasy writers. Of course I would like to transport my readers to an equally rich dimension. I have only been developing the world of the Clan for four years however, rather than the lifetime Tolkien put into his world. Come back to me in a few decades and we shall see where I stand then.

5. Could there be/Is there be a sequel for the book?

I have not yet written a sequel for Clan. I don't think I would follow the same characters necessarily, but I would love to compose another piece in the same world. There are several hundred tangents I would like to pursue, such as acid trolls, or hunting on the Fortress Meadows. So the answer is "not yet, but I hope there will be soon."

News, Updates, Articles and Reviews

JEMMA7729 by Phoebe Wray:

"The right stuff seems to resonate in the first few sentences, where it counts. The set-up sketches the state of affairs in the narrator's high-tech, big-brother's-watching world ...Techno-jargon segues to familiar territory as Jemma's voice emerges, wry, precocious and believable... The hook is set, promising a good read for the next 200-plus pages."
M. E. Jones, The Public Spirit

"Jemma7729 is a clever and thought-provoking novel with lots of action. The narrative moves at a quick pace, propelled by Jemma's sharp wit and crisp dialogue. But at the center of it all is Jemma herself - brave, rebellious, definitely too strong for her own good, yet sensitive at the same time. Wray has painted a vivid world filled with original, interesting rules and way of life, transporting the reader to another place and time. I highly recommend this novel not only to fans of SF, but also to those readers who enjoy women's fiction." — Mayra Calvani

Phoebe Wray was also interviewed at The Dark Phantom regarding her career as a writer and advice to potential authors.

Clan of the Dung-Sniffers by Lee Danielle Hubbard:

"The world Hubbard presents to readers is original and unexpectedly complicated as it unveils itself piece by piece through the filter of Ksar's baffled observations and Yaryk's ambitious plans. Clan of the Dung-Sniffers is entertaining and offbeat, a first novel for Hubbard to be proud of." — Dru Pagliassotti, The Harrow

Lachlei by M. H. Bonham

"Lachlei is short but packed with action, an epic fantasy in which gods and mortals interact, the dead play as important a role in the Wyrd as the living, and ancient rivalries and secrets have the power to surprise even the masters of the Nine Worlds." — Dru Pagliassotti, The Harrow

The Green Spirit Project (Exertus, Spiritus, Viridis)

For EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing and Dragon Moon Press, our "carbon footprint" is significantly higher than the average person's. Simply put, EDGE prints books and this process uses up trees; this is what most people know. What some people don't know is what EDGE plans to do about our "carbon footprint".

EDGE is concerned that in a few decades, the trees that we take for granted now may not be able to keep up with the amount of pollution and carbon that we as a society spew into the atmosphere. Each year, Americans use 50 million tons of paper consuming more than 850 million trees (http://library.thinkquest.org/11353/facts.htm).

There are approximately 2,000 trees cut down every day for the use of paper or wood products, therefore the world loses 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day due to rainforest deforestation. That equates to 50,000 species a year. As the rainforest species disappear, so do many possible cures for life-threatening diseases. Currently, 121 prescription drugs sold worldwide come from plant-derived sources. While 25% of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforest ingredients, less than 1% of these tropical trees and plants have been tested by scientists
(www.rain-tree.com).

.

Over the next year, EDGE is doing our share in rebuilding the forests that are cut down each year. For every tree EDGE uses for our books, we are donating a percentage of our sales to plant a new tree(s) to help relieve our "carbon footprint" so that the next generation can breathe clean air, and get the proper medication needed. EDGE and Dragon Moon will be printing all of our new Spring 2008 titles with an eco friendly reminder on the first page. This is to show that EDGE and Dragon Moon truly care about our environment. The more EDGE and Dragon Moon books you purchase, the more you help us to save our precious rainforests, forests, and environment.

The "Paper or Plastic Debate" over whether it is better to use paper bags or plastic bags has been in discussion for a long time. Environmentalists have often debated over the correct answer to the "Paper or Plastic Debate", which turns out to be NEITHER! To help the environment, reusable canvas bags are the best solution. They will never have to use energy to be recycled or take up space in a landfill. The next time you buy a book (or two or three) from EDGE at a convention and you bring your own bag to carry your books in, we will give you $1.00 off your purchase!

EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing along with Dragon Moon Press would like your help. We are hosting a contest and giving away a FREE New i-Pod Nano as a prize (Approximate value: $200.00).*

It’s simple. All you have to do is create a video of one of our 2008 Season novels (February 2008 – November 2008) that is between 1:00 – 3:00 minutes. The video can be anything from a simple animated cartoon to an acted out scene from the novel. It is a video to communicate a message about the book, author, subject matter, or theme; not just the novel itself. The contest will run from May 1st to June 30 at which time we will select the top 10 videos and post them on the EDGE website for public voting. The voting will begin July 1st and run until July 31st at which time we will announce the winner.

The winning video will be posted on the EDGE website, on FaceBook, YouTube, and other various social networking websites.
