FEATURED BOOKS — JEMMA7729 by Phoebe Wray, Lachlei by M. H. Bonham

LachleiM. H. Bonham

Phoebe Wray sat down with us this week to discuss her new release JEMMA7729.

1. Where does Jemma come from in you?

Well, she’s not me. But my hot button is unfairness, and so is hers. I’ve spent most of my life as an advocate for the environment, for the arts, for political freedom, for an even playing field for everyone, especially women. I guess it’s not surprising that Jemma is a curmudgeon.

2. Could your idea of society in the future, actually happen?
Something like it could. Economic collapses, the end of big oil, tyrannies replacing democracies — what would we have then? As I answer you, Saudi Arabia just decreed that Valentine’s Day may not be celebrated, no candy and flowers to say “I love you” over there. It’s taken over 200 years for a woman to run for President in America. A current candidate wants to rewrite our Constitution along Christian biblical lines. What if ...? We hope that things will only change for the better,  but what if they don’t? Most people recognize the Orwellian double-speak that is prevalent in the world. Head’s up.

3. What sort of messages are you bringing across in JEMMA7729?
The big ones: one person can make a difference; standing up for what you believe in is worth the risk, is everything really. JEMMA7729 is a cautionary tale.  We can’t let this happen here. Add in that old 1960’s mantra: Question authority.

4. What political complications/expression issues do you forsee with JEMMA7729? If not any, what ramifications could there be if there were political issues raised in todays society about JEMMA7729?
Wouldn’t that be fun! The book is not based on any specific political event. I don’t see any dire “consequences.”  The events of 9/11 have resulted in creeping repressions and loss of civil liberties that are uncomfortable, but we still do have free speech. There may indeed be people who disagree with the book’s message — they burned Harry Potter, maybe Jemma will get tossed in the fire. Ideas can’t be destroyed. If they get talked about — that’s healthy. I’m sure many people will notice that Jemma’s government is very secretive and tells Big Lies. They’ll read in that whatever’s in their own world.

5. Could there be a sequel for the book?
That depends on the reading public. If they like Jemma, buy into her world, want to know what happens next, and let me know that, of course there could be a sequel.

News, Updates, Articles and Reviews

The Complete Guide to Writing Science Fiction Vol. 1:
"A comprehensive, deftly edited, 311-page 'how to' instruction guide for writing in the science fiction genre and any of its many subgenres, "The Complete Guide To Writing Science Fiction: Volume One" is a collection of superbly presented essays and articles by knowledgeable and successful writers ranging from Piers Anthony, to Orson Scott Card, to Tina Morgan." - James A. Cox, Midwest Book Review

Darkness of the God by Amber Hayward:
"The premise itself is rather interesting. This is sort of a loose urban fantasy. The fantasy element is the mysterious onca ability that Caldos, Ana, and Jaoa possess, which allows them to not only to heal people, but to control their thoughts and actions." - Shawn Duke, The Fantasy & Sci-Fi Lovin' Book Review

Darwin's Paradox by Nina Munteanu:
"An intelligent virus and an intelligent machine conspire to sieve North America's largest city, then spread world chaos - and the only woman who can save humanity is the one who began the virus. Her return to the city she once fled will lead to a different kind of revolution in this involving story of change, perfect for any collection appealing to avid science fiction readers." - Midwest Book Review

Darwin's Paradox by Nina Munteanu Author Appearance:

For EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing and Dragon Moon Press, our "carbon footprint" is significantly higher than the average person's. Simply put, EDGE prints books and this process uses up trees; this is what most people know. What some people don't know is what EDGE plans to do about our "carbon footprint".

EDGE is concerned that in a few decades, the trees that we take for granted now may not be able to keep up with the amount of pollution and carbon that we as a society spew into the atmosphere. Each year, Americans use 50 million tons of paper consuming more than 850 million trees (http://library.thinkquest.org/11353/facts.htm).

There are approximately 2,000 trees cut down every day for the use of paper or wood products, therefore the world looses 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day due to rainforest deforestation. That equates to 50,000 species a year. As the rainforest species disappear, so do many possible cures for life-threatening diseases. Currently, 121 prescription drugs sold worldwide come from plant-derived sources. While 25% of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforest ingredients, less that 1% of these tropical trees and plants have been tested by scientists (www.rain-tree.com).

.

Over the next year, EDGE is doing our share in rebuilding the forests that are cut down each year. For every tree EDGE uses for our books, we are donating a percentage of our sales to plant a new tree(s) to help relieve our "carbon footprint" so that the next generation can breathe clean air, and get the proper medication needed. EDGE and Dragon Moon will be printing all of our new Spring 2008 titles with an ecofriendly reminder on the first page. This is to show that EDGE and Dragon Moon truly cares about our environment. The more EDGE and Dragon Moon books your purchase, the more you help us to save our precious rainforests, forests, and environment.

The "Paper or Plastic Debate" over whether it is better to use paper bags or plastic bags has been in discussion for a long time. Environmentalists have often debated over the correct answer to the "Paper or Plastic Debate", which turns out to be NEITHER! To help the environment, reusable canvas bags are the best solution. They will never have to use energy to be recycled or take up space in a landfill. The next time you buy a book (or two or three) from EDGE at a convention, you will receive a canvas bag that can be used and reused so that you too can cut back on your "carbon footprint".
