Erik wrote his first novel in a small attic room in a downtown rooming house,
sitting on a cushion on the floor with a laptop perched on a box in front of him.

"I started reading when I was two, according to my mother. This led me to work my way through books meant for children far older than I was. I discovered the fantastic early on — fairy tales, folk tales, science fiction and fantasy and comic books of all sort. It hooked me. I met the Hardy Boys when I was six and Bilbo Baggins when I was eight. I cried for an hour when I was ten because that really shouldn't have happened to Frodo toward the end of The Two Towers.
It was also at age ten when I first thought, "hey, I could tell a story," and started writing. Before I was 12 I had attempted a book (I got to about 8 pages), a 10 page epic poem in rhyming couplets and various bits of stories and poetry.
In high school I was smart enough and not interested enough that I didn't do any more homework than was absolutely necessary. Instead, I read voraciously, did high school drama, played fantasy role playing games and began studying the martial arts. And through the many downs and few ups of high school, I kept writing -- the sort of stories and poetry that an overly-morbid, overly-shy and somewhat antisocial teenage boy writes. You will be thankful to know that none of it survived.
It was in my last year of high school where I had the first vague notions of "being a writer." I can lay the credit for this directly on Mr. Robert Currie, a great English teacher, writer and poet, who allowed me into his creative writing class and gave me my first real lessons in writing.
In university, the theatre sunk its teeth and claws into me. I realized that the theatre is a place where human nature and human emotions are laid bare and explored to their depths. It is the home of the fantastic, where the impossible is contemplated every day, and where imagination rules all and brings stories to life. In short, it is one of the better training grounds for a writer.
After university I gathered up what money I could and moved to Toronto to be an actor and a writer. I spent thirteen years pursuing (but never quite catching) a career as an actor. I performed medieval and renaissance theatre, co-hosted a TV show for two years, studied sword-fighting and stage combat and directed fights on stage.
I wrote my first novel in a small attic room in a downtown rooming house, sitting on a cushion on the floor with my laptop perched on a box in front of me. I wrote my second novel, which became Small Magics, in a co-op apartment I shared with my girlfriend (now my wife).
And I'm still writing now. Right now, in fact. As you read this."
