The Trillionist
Release date: October, 2012
Sage Rojan is no ordinary child....
Consumed since birth by an uncanny ever-expanding intelligence and thirst for knowledge, Sage Rojan single-handedly accelerates his planet Tidon from horse and buggy technology directly into the space age, bringing new opportunity and a new way of life. Loved by all, he is celebrated as an inventor and hero.
But to Sage Rogan, himself, brilliance has a dark side.
Tormented since birth by exhausting nightmares -- nightmares he can never remember -- Sage is driven to "be perfect;" to learn everything. Yet Sage's achievements bring him no joy. Only the compulsion to do more. Be more.
Even his mother sees two people inside her young son -- one, a brilliant prodigy, one a bad-tempered task master.
Finally, armed with powerful mental strategies, Sage uncovers the secret "shadow self" of his dreams. But what he unexpectedly discovers is a revelation of such universal magnitude, it could transform Tidon into a miracle of technological achievement -- or threaten the planet's very existence!
Sage realizes he must find a way to overcome the powerful inner force that controls his every move, or face -- as will his planet -- absolute destruction.
But can he break free from his unseen shackles in time, or is Sage Rogan destined to remain a prisoner in his own mind, watching his world
crumble around him?
About Sagan Jeffries
Former world curling champ Ed Lukowich (writing as Sagan Jeffries -- to keep his careers from colliding with each other) claimed his last Brier Purple Heart in 1994. Although he still throws rocks once a week, his focus now is on his first book, The Trillionist - which has nothing to do with the sport that made him famous (he did author three curling-instruction books and a coffee-table book on curling in the 1980s).
"I've been interested in science-fiction since I was a kid," said Lukowich, who lists Carl Sagan and Arthur C. Clarke among his favourite science-fiction authors. "I find it interesting. Some people read fantasy novels, I enjoy science fiction."
The initial idea for The Trillionist, now in final edit, began 14 years ago, when Lukowich was working as a curling instructor.
"I really can't remember why I started writing The Trillionist, but I had a first draft completed in 1998," said Lukowich. "It was quite a bit different than it is now. Then I got busy with Sportsnet (as a colour commentator in the early days of the Grand Slam circuit) and USA Curling (as its athlete development director) and it got shelved. I would look at it on the bookshelf once a year and think, 'Oh, I'd like to finish that one day.' "
That opportunity came in 2009 when Lukowich resigned his USA Curling position; he pulled the manuscript off the shelf and started writing, revising and writing some more.
"I've had a lot of experiences that kind of prepared me along the way," said Lukowich. "Reading a lot of science fiction helped; being on Sportsnet, I had to learn how to be a little more creative. On the other hand, I think it's been more difficult than I ever imagined, you know? I've written the book more times than I thought I ever would. I've finished the book four times now; I'd pick it up a day later, or I'd talk to someone a day later, and go, 'Oh, I have to redo all of this.' But I'm at the point now where I'm not writing any more. At some point in time, you have to say, 'Hey, time to get your fingers off of that thing.' "
Lukowich laughingly concedes that there's no correlation between curling and science fiction, although it's possible there may be a reference to the sport in the final book. (MORE)
